Leadership Contra Costasm
Leadership Contra Costasm is Now Accepting Applications

Leadership Contra Costa (LCC), sponsored by the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce, is now accepting applications for enrollment in the 2010-2011 Class. LCC is designed to motivate and identify potential leaders and prepare them for community leadership.

Participants meet once a month by means of workshops, presentations from community leaders, and group exercises to develop their understanding of leadership roles and prevailing issues with the community. With an alumni roster of over 500 individuals this program has proven to be an asset to the community and society.

Leadership Contra Costasm accepts 28 to 32 individuals from throughout the county with diverse backgrounds to participate in the program. The twenty-fourth year of this outstanding program will kick off at the end of September. Marking its 5th year anniversary, the highly anticipated East Bay Women's Conference presented by the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce and The PMI Group, Inc., in association with Chevron Corporation, convened Monday, March 1, 2010, at the San Ramon Marriott, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This 2010 event, Navigating Change - Facing Forward, with award-winning journalist Lisa Ling as keynote speaker, was a full day of inspired learning, networking, and socializing.

The EBWC is a distinctive event of programming excellence that blends premier keynote and featured speaker presentations; breakout sessions that focus on critical issues important to women who strive to shape their personal and professional lives; more than 40 exhibitor booths; and an end-of-day reception with entertainment, refreshments, and surprises. The EBWC annually sells out to an audience of more than 525 attendees, who have responded enthusiastically to past powerhouse speakers Linda Ellerbee, Gail Sheehy, Madam Jehan Sadat, and Isabel Allende.

Lisa Ling, Keynote Speaker, 2010 EBWC

Lisa Ling, award-winning, international journalist, is host of National Geographic Explorer, reporter for Channel One News, and special correspondent for the Oprah Winfrey Show, ABC’s Nightline, and CNN’s critically acclaimed series Planet in Peril, among other journalistic activities. Ms. Ling has reported on critical issues from more than two dozen countries, produced eight documentaries for PBS, and co-authored Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood. She speaks to audiences about her journeys as a reporter writing about real-life adventures and uses her role as a journalist to focus on navigating positive change.

 

Kathy Buckley, Featured Speaker, 2010 EBWC

Kathy Buckley, “America’s First Hearing Impaired Comedienne” and author of If You Could Hear What I See: Lessons About Life, Luck and the Choices We Make, has turned roadblocks into springboards for both humor and education; she spreads her messages of open communications and open-mindedness through comedy and motivational speaking. Among other awards, Ms. Buckley is the recipient of the Woman of the Year Award from the Oralingua School for the Hearing Impaired, the American Hero Award from the City of Hope, and the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Award.


Lorrie Sullenberger, Featured Speaker, 2010 EBWC

Lorrie Sullenberger, fitness expert and founder of Fit and Fabulous – Outdoors, is a regularly featured health expert on ABC 7’s Views From the Bay. Married to local hero Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, Ms. Sullenberger is a hero herself to hundreds of women whose lives have been changed because of her infectious enthusiasm and advocacy for women’s health. Ms. Sullenberger inspires women at all fitness levels to navigate their own change and discover more exhilarating lifestyles by incorporating the outdoors in their quests for better health.

 

Sunne Wright McPeak, Featured Speaker, 2010 EBWC

Sunne Wright McPeak, President/CEO of the California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF), a statewide non-profit whose mission is to "close the digital divide" by accelerating the deployment and adoption of broadband. Prior to joining CETF, Ms. McPeak was Secretary of the California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, the State's larges agency with 42,000 employees. Ms. McPeak served on the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors for 15 years and is Past President/CEO of both the Bay Area Council (7 years) and Bay Area Economic Forum (3 years).

In addition to these four extraordinary speakers, 2010 EBWC featured a rich menu of breakout session choices presented by industry experts in:

2009 East Bay Women's Conference Made Quite an Impact by Linda Rimac Colberg

For the more than 500 fortunate attendees and participants of the Walnut Creek Chamber's 2009 East Bay Women's Conference, the first Monday in March was a very special day. Designed as a day for networking, learning, shopping, and socializing, the fourth annual EBWC was a lively blend of distinguished speakers, breakout sessions, exhibitor booths, health screenings, and networking opportunities. This year's theme, "Creating Impact: Influencing Positive Change," was a springboard for speaker and breakout session topics, and, judging by attendance and pockets of conversation and feedback, the conference was a success on many levels.

Super-charged humorist and generational expert Meagan Johnson described the four generations mixing it up in today's workforce: Traditionals, Baby Boomers, Gen-Xers, and the New Millennium Generation. All in good fun, she pointed out their distinctive traits and virtues, and why they just don't "get" each other. She urged employees and employers to embrace generational strengths - stop rolling their eyes - and enjoy the variety.

Keynote speaker and celebrated author Isabel Allende put her poignant history and beating heart on display as she recounted, with grace and impish good humor, her days growing up in Argentina, Chile and Lebanon; her passion for reading ignited by sneak peaks at The Arabian Nights; and her relationships with the men in her life. She also spoke of her daughter Paula's death, detailed in her memoir, Paula. Allende told of the writing process in a voice soft, but firm, as a spring breeze. "It wasn't the hardest book to write," she said, "but it was the most painful." With contagious joy, she urged everyone to embrace life and empower lives.

Tote bags, donated by Whole Foods, were brimming with goodies purchased at exhibitor booths and collected at breakout sessions. Hundreds of names and numbers were exchanged among acquaintances and new friends for later get-togethers. Several lucky winners left with prizes ranging from spa gift certificates to a weekend with a Jaguar. And, at day's end, after the sparkling wine and hors d'oeuvres reception, as attendees were gathering their coats and bags and saying their goodbyes, the liveliness of the rooms and hallways - and even quiet corners - spoke to the fullness of the day, the success of the event, and the enjoyment shared by attendees and participants.
